Featured Tattoo Artist: Neal Tyner
Award-winning, international tattoo artist, Neal Tyner was raised in Brownsville, Texas and has been tattooing since early 2010. In 2009 he fell in love with the idea of being a tattoo artist thanks to his dear friend Lokesh Verma of Delvil’z Tattooz in India, who influenced him to try it. In 2009 Neal went to New York to work with Lisa Fasulo who guided him through the basics of tattooing. In 2010 he had the opportunity to work with Gary Gray of Wisconsin who taught him the foundation of creating depth in his work. After studying tattooing in India for 1 year, Neal was given the opportunity to be an apprentice in Sweden with world-renowned tattoo artist Jocke Hultman along with Mike Hultman & Anna Hultman of Hultman Family Tattoos. It was Jocke who helped him develop, and therefore ignite, his passion in Asian-style tattooing.
In 2012 he opened his own shop, Tattooed Empire, in Brownsville, Texas. As he was led further into his career as a tattoo artist, 2013 & 2014 were great years as Neal became sponsored by Alla Prima Ink and was invited to attend the Stockholm and Iceland tattoo conventions where he also served as judge.
In 2015 he attended New Delhi’s tattoo convention, HeartWork, where he had the opportunity to work alongside Paul booth & Anil Gupta; he also served as a judge at this convention. Upon entering competitions at the South Texas Tattoo Convention in 2014, 2015, and 2016, Neal’s work was bestowed 10 awards over the span of 2 years including best sleeve and best Asian piece. Most recently in 2016, Neal has gained sponsorship by Hustle Butter Deluxe tattoo care and Peak Needles. Neal has also accepted an invitation to guest-spot at the world-famous Club Tattoo inside the Planet Hollywood Resort and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada in December of 2016.
Neal’s Asian-inspired work has taken on a life and an aesthetic all on its own due to his particularly meticulous attention to flow, movement, contour, and subject usage. Neal continually strives to develop and cultivate skill as an artist. Everyday brings new inspiration as he realizes that he is a part of a long-standing tradition that embodies art in its most primal and personal forms. In his own words, “I’m very fortunate to have embarked on this journey; my eyes have been opened to a world full of beautiful art and equally intriguing people.”
Neal extends heart-felt thanks and humble gratitude to his loved ones – his wife and children, the entire Tattooed Empire kin, and family of mentors, Lokesh Verma, Gary Gray, and Jocke and Mike Hultman – for their unending generosity in support, encouragement, and guidance.
